I am not sure if Priscilla Chigumba, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) chair, bleached to be such a yellow-bone. But I am not rushing to make her pigmentation any of my business because it’s not and musn’t be. And, by and large, I don’t believe we must start judging technocrats on the basis of their private and personal choices.

It’s not as easy as that, though. It’s sometimes a messy affair trying to isolate the private from the public or professional. That was evident in a somewhat crude conversation that emerged mid-last week when Edmund Kudzayi, former editor at the Sunday Mail, claimed that Chigumba was involved in an extra-marital affair with Mines minister Winston Chitando.

Not long ago I warned about the dangers of coalitions built on political convenience and not values and ideological leanings.

I warned that such coalitions bring unsavory characters onboard whose main purpose will be at variance with the greater goals and values that drive the main political party’s agenda.

Before my ink has dried, the warnings are now manifesting.

There is a group of disgruntled former ZANUPF supporters and king pins like Edmund Kudzayi, who fought so hard to delegitimize and ridicule the MDCT and its leader before they were shown the door out of ZANUPF.

As Oliver Mtukudzi said, you can take someone out of a place, but you can never take that place out of them.

Webster Shamu, in a video clip, is seen urging voters in Chegutu to vote for whom they want and not necessarily vote for Mnangagwa. The video clip has since gone viral.

Mnangagwa, sensing defeat, has panicked and constructively fired Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo as ZANU PF spokesman ten days before the election. Typically of his village politics mentality, he has replaced him with Paul Mangwana.

Further to my article last week about the situation in Zimbabwe, which you can find on the nehandaradio.com website here, I would like to say a few words about the election that’s happening in just under two weeks. The upcoming election is a great opportunity for Zimbabweans in general, for the current political leadership, and even for the ousted dictator. I will explain how:

The recent threats by both the MDC Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa and Tendai Biti, who leads the People’s Democratic Party, one of the fringe parties in an alliance with the MDC, of announcing the results of this month national elections ahead of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec), are unhelpful.

Priscilla Chigumba reminds me of Tobaiwa Mudede - arrogant, Zanu PF sympathiser. A man who presided over biased elections for years.

What Mnangagwa fails to realise is that he is a coup president. No one elected him. He has no legitimacy. He is one of the most unelectable politicians in the country. He inspires no one except those hardcore Zanu supporters. But then the hardcore Zanuists are fast becoming a rare breed.

Zimbabwe like most African countries’ populations is dominated by young people. Unfortunately, these young people are burdened and badly served by ageing leaders. Historically, young leaders are energetic, rich in new ideas, technically competent and dynamic innovative capabilities.

Zec must not be allowed to dismiss the MDC Alliance’s legitimate concerns on the basis that small parties that are being allegedly sponsored by Zanu PF could not agree with the main alliance’s demands.

Tafi Mhaka: "Whatever happened to transpire in the violent, turbulent and volatile struggle for freedom – including a devastating car bomb in Lusaka that killed Herbert Chitepo and a fatal road accident that claimed Josiah Tongogara in Mozambique on the eve of independence – God backed Gushungo wholeheartedly and gave him excellent health and long, precious life. So when Nkomo, a humble, true man of the people, one who could have defeated a long-held, populist tendency to vote along ethnic and regional allegiances, offered his services to the people: God rejected Umdala Wethu, resoundingly, and chose Gushungo and tribalism instead."

My first call on my bucket list for Zimbabwe was fiscal stability and discipline, the second was monetary stability and predictability. This week on Monday the informal rate of exchange for the RTGS dollar was 1.90 to 1. That is an effective devaluation of 12 percent in a week.

Two to one looks as if it's just around the corner. Inflation will follow - that is why these fundamental macro-economic issues are so important to everyone. In fact, I will be blunt - unless you get these right, nothing else works.

Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) chairperson Priscilla Chigumba and her entire team have a huge task at their hands of running a credible poll on July 30. Zec risks failing this mandate because of the way they have batted away demands from the opposition parties, particularly the MDC Alliance.
