November 2017 remains etched in the memories of many Zimbabweans as well as foreigners as a month when so much promise loomed on the horizon.

Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga is crouching under a downpour. And it seems he has little space to run into, so chances are high he may drown in the rain.

First, he developed an unusual pigmentation after leading a military intervention that toppled ex-president Robert Mugabe almost a year ago. Haters said he had bleached.

Then people started accusing him of running a parallel government. After that, he fell seriously ill and is hardly out of the ward. As he was taking the pills, his boss moved in and snatched the Defence portfolio that he was running since the coup from him.

As a nation we have been sucked into a mess that only a miracle of change can remedy. The ruling elite have created a system in which the livelihood of the common man on the street has no say on how to live his life, hyperinflation is the order of the day and causes strife in many homes.

So, Jonathan Moyo finally “came out” in Alex Magaisa’s BSR on Sunday, 11 November. There have been mixed reactions with some applauding the interview and others castigating the former Minister for all sorts of reasons.

Mine is not to judge the BSR because I think Alex has an important role to play in terms of information dissemination and analysis of the Zimbabwe political arena.

What I have issues with is the content of Jonathan Moyo’s responses. Crass, arrogant, seemingly invincible, unrepentant, manipulating and devoid of hunhu (morals and ethics) is a bevy of words that I could only think of to describe his responses in that interview.

On October 29, governor of Tanzania's largest city Dar-es-Salaam, Paul Makonda, announced that he formed an anti-gay unit to hunt down "suspected" homosexuals. Makonda is an ardent Christian and close ally of Tanzanian President John Magufuli, a traditionalist who believes "even cows disapprove of" homosexuality.

The little bit of economics that I did at Advanced Level and subsequent economic reporting modules at university taught me that the new law meant to sent illegal foreign exchange dealers to jail for ten years will NEVER work.

Economic activity cannot be controlled and determined by jail threats without addressing the flawed economic fundamentals.

Would you believe that your poverty is being created by your own government? I know it is hard to believe, but here is the story.

Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson in their 2012 seminal book Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Poverty, and Prosperity; have this answer: “Rather … opposition to economic growth has its own, unfortunately coherent, logic.”

On the face of it, it would rather look illogical that your leaders could see any benefit in keeping you — their own subjects — in poverty.

Do they not fear the consequences of leading a disgruntled, restless and angry population like we have seen in Libya, Tunisia, and Syria, etc?

Well, maybe, but as we saw in the August 1 killings, they still trust in their guns.

We are one year into the post Robert Mugabe era and as such, it is important to reflect on the road traveled so far since the dramatic power grab of November of 2017.

I can imagine our rulers continuing to laugh at how the citizen is constantly fixated with inane stuff and being off the mark regarding what should be important to them.

One day it is Lumumba, the next day it is the “Big Fish” arrests, then it is the headlines on the ruling party infighting followed by 2023 Youth league presidential candidate declarations, then you throw in the oil discovery myths and you have a never ending circus....
