We draw our inspiration from Mbuya Nehanda, the mother of our nation. The spirit medium was the inspiration behind the 1896-97 first chimurenga.
Nehanda Radio is a Zimbabwean radio station that provides 24 hr running radio internet news. We aim to provide breaking news as it happens either on this site, in our broadcasts or via our e-mail alert system.
Zimbabwe is in the midst of a great tragedy and we believe we have a role to play in informing decision makers, diasporans and Zimbabweans in general on the way forward in their search for justice and peace.
When the Europeans arrived in Zimbabwe, Nehanda's spirit medium was a woman by the name of Nyakasikana. She lived in the northern part of Zimbabwe.
Some believe she was of the VaRozvi tribe but others suggest she was from the VaHera tribe. It so happened that during Nyakasikana's mediumship, another great regional Shona spirit medium (Mhodoro Huru), by the name of Kaguvi posessed a man by the name of Gumboreshumba (lit. the lion's foot).
Gumboreshumba's spirit is affectionately known in Shona circles as Sekuru Kaguvi. Kaguvi and Nehanda used their leadership to spearhead the first war of resistance (Chimurenga CheKutanga) against European domination of the region. Nehanda Radio will continue that fight for justice against all oppressors black or white.
