Lynda Masarira finally gets freedom

By Tatenda Dewa | Harare Bureau |

The High Court on Monday finally granted bail to Lynda Masarira, an activist who has been languishing in jail for alleged public violence.

lynda-masarira-in-leg-chainsJudge David Mangota ordered Masarira’s release.

She has been in prison since 6 July, with the lower courts refusing her bail because she has another pending case in Mutare.

Recently, her trial was postponed when the prison services department failed to bring her to court.

The activists who were arrested together with Masarira are all out on bail.

Masarira joined hundreds of other Zimbabweans who in July protested against President Robert Mugabe’s government which they accuse of corruption and the failure to arrest the current economic crisis.

ZLHR senior member, Andrew Makoni, last week filed an urgent application to compel authorities to produce Masarira at the High Court.

In the application, Makoni was challenging the continued incarceration of Lynda, who was supposed to appear before a Mutare magistrate for a default inquiry for a pending case.

Makoni’s application noted that the continued imprisonment of Masarira violated her constitutional right to freedom of movement. Nehanda Radio
