Zimbabweans protest in the USA, urge Mugabe to go
Zimbabweans living in the United States of America on Saturday braved the sweltering heat to stage a protest on the deteriorating social, economic and political situation in Zimbabwe outside the Zimbabwe Embassy.
The Zimbabweans, who said they openly support Pastor Evan Mawarire of #ThisFlag and #Tajamuka-Sesijikile Campaign, expressed dismay over high levels of poverty, President Robert Mugabe’s continued stay in office, corruption and economic decline.
The protesters sang revolutionary songs and denounced what they said was unparalleled anarchy in Zimbabwe where people are living from hand to mouth.
Speaker after speaker urged President Mugabe to step down saying he has allegedly ruined the nation, which registered historic hyper-inflationary figures between 2008 and 2009 before the abandonment of the Zimbabwe dollar and introduction of multiple currencies.
Pastor Mawarire and Tajamuka-Sesijikile recently organized protests that led to the arrests of over 300 people. Videos leaked by some state security agents showed police beating up arrested protesters with button sticks.
Meanwhile, the MDC-T Women’s Assembly on Saturday staged what it dubbed ‘beat-the-pots’ protest in Zimbabwe’s second largest city, Bulawayo, expressing anger over high levels of poverty in the country.
The protest was led by former deputy prime minister, Thokozani Khupe, who is also the Morgan Tsvangirai’s deputy in the opposition MDC-T party.
