Barely days after protesters brought the border town of Beitbridge to a halt, fresh riots have rocked the Zimbabwean capital, Harare.
Reports from Harare indicate that public transporters were engaged in running battles with the police over the high number of roadblocks in urban areas.
Police sources indicated that the roadblocks, where motorists are forced to pay spot fines, would end on Saturday, 2 June, but there is no let up yet.
Areas affected by the Monday riots include Hatfield, Mabvuku-Tafara, Epworth and Ruwa, all on the south-eastern side of the capital.
Hundreds of protesters last Friday caused the temporary closure of Beitbridge and Musina border posts, protesting against government’s decision to ban some imported products that informal traders are reselling in Zimbabwe for a living.
The police said they had arrested more than 70 of the rioters by Sunday.
