When the Professor leads and the Doctor follows

By Bez Wimba

There are two issues that this article will try to address. Both issues are pertinent to the evolving political landscape in general with particular ramifications to the shaping of the opposition forces to Zanu PF’s continued survival and dominance.

Grace Mugabe and Jonathan Moyo
Grace Mugabe and Jonathan Moyo

The first relates to the myth that Jonathan Moyo, the verbose Zanu PF equivalent of Sadam’s comical Ali, is like a duck on water whose serene appearance above water hides a ferocious peddling in the murky waters it sits on.

On the surface he is a bonafide card carrying, politburo and central member of the misruling party, and yet some would like us to believe that he is changing Zanu PF from within. An allegation that has been mentioned more so now that Zanu is experiencing internal strife, fights that have taken the scalp of a sitting VP and many other functionaries of high and low standing.

The second issue at stake here is the illusion of ZPF, People First – a party born out of the purges in Zanu PF and Damascus moment of the disputed helicopter feller ‘Dr’ Amai Mujuru.

We are now being led to believe that she along with a cabal of dodgy unpalatable faces previously associated with gross abuses of human rights and life (Christpower May your dear soul rest in peace) can indeed be our saviour from the clutches of Zanu PF from whence they pledged undying loyalty.

Who can forget the diminutive Zanu PF then chair SK Moyo and Amai Mujuru vachitamba kongonya, celebrating a stolen vote that snatched victory from MDC reach in the last elections. The article will argue that even in the acceptance of such far-fetched myths, they do not serve Zimbabwe in both the short and long terms.

A bit like the old fish wives’ tale that lightning never strikes the same place twice, believed by many but on closer inspection dismissed to the annals of myths of the diesel rocks of fame.

In the first case, it is claimed and accepted by many that the Prof is a smart aleck, so smart that he has infiltrated Zanu PF and government and is changing it from within, an absurd claim that is as laughable as asking football loving crowds to contribute to a match ticket so one can go and watch the champions league for the benefit of those outside.

So the Prof gets to enjoy all the trappings of power, eating and supping at the high table all for the benefit of us all in the opposition. For the masses fed up with Zanu PF we have to wait patiently as he goes about changing things from within.

And the Prof does not disappoint, with an air of indignant entitlement he portrays an untouchable maverick who knows all than most. He has a penchant of launching his salvos with such ferocity as witnessed during his days in exile. Then he had nothing charitable to say about both the party and man who led it and still leads it today.

One need only ask uncle google for a litany of anti-Mugabe articles by the professor to see the extent to which he articulated the rot in Zanu PF. So it was a big surprise when he was brought back into the fold or from the cold as he later put it himself. This is when the myth started spreading roots, that he was going back to change things from within.

Before long he was back at his best, lambasting the opposition MDC least helped by the disorganised chaos managed my one pantaloons challenged leader Morgan Richard Tsvangirai. So for Prof Moyo, changing Zanu PF from within meant suffocating a stuttering opposition to breathe life back into the misruling party.

Was there any change in Zanu PF? NO. Instead the misruling party bounced back and left the opposition for dead, squabbling, dithering and sea sick from jaunts of the high seas – you catch my drift.
