Mutodi blasts showbiz journos

Sungura musician Energy “Musorowembada” Mutodi says while his music commands respect on radio and among fans in Zimbabwe and South Africa, he has been downplayed by local “entertainment journalists who remain entangled in a primitive mental prison that a rich and educated man cannot be a musician”.

The businessman-cum-musician said because of this bias by showbiz reporters his studio albums are not as popular as they should be.

Mutodi will be releasing his 12th studio album Mupedzanhamo which is expected to hit the market next week.

While some are of the opinion that he has released too many albums in his short career, Mutodi says he will continue to do so “because I take music as a hobby.

“The latest album is however, expected to raise the bar in sungura circles and as usual will force other prominent musicians to revise their works set to be released this year if they are to give Mutodi any meaningful competition.

“The album carries five tracks and these are Keresi, Vavariro, Uchamutora sei, Ndiri Mufambi and Ndezvavo all engineered by Munyaradzi Viya of Vially Studios. The album is due next week,” said Mutodi.

Mutodi added that he takes music as a hobby.

“Apart from singing, I am also a politician and an academic as I authored several Geography textbooks used in high schools in a number of countries, including Zimbabwe as well as being a researcher in financial markets and economics.

“I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography and War Studies from the University of Zimbabwe in the year 2001 and a Masters in Business Administration degree from the same university in 2015.

“Currently, I am studying for a PhD in Business Administration with the University of Cape Town and a Bachelor of Laws degree with the University of Zimbabwe concurrently,” said the Chigorodanda singer.

Some of his albums include Simbi YaM’dhara (Real Sounds of Africa), Kumasese (Real Sounds of Africa), Sekawo Mbichana, Magetsi Ngaabake, Kuita Kuri Kwenyu, Chimvuramabwe, Ndinorota Landlord, Chidhedhedhe, Ndiri Munzira Kuuya and Ndinokutendai. Daily News
