Journalist Stewart Chabwinja dies

HARARE – Stewart Chabwinja (45), the Assistant Editor of the Zimbabwe Independent newspaper has passed away. According to reports Chabwinja died in the early hours of Thursday.

Chabwinja joined Alpha Media Holdings in 2002 as a sub-editor for The Standard newspaper before moving up the ladder in 2008, to become the Chief Sub-Editor for AMH’s business weekly, The Zimbabwe Independent.

In March 2012, he was appointed the Assistant editor for the Zimbabwe Independent,a position he held until his time of death.

Tributes continued to pour in for Chabwinja from fellow journalists.

Ranga Mberi: “I have no deep words, Stewart. Thanks for all the laughs, Shutto. And for all that encouragement during that rough time mu newsroom back in the day. RIP my guy.”

Stanley Kwenda: “He was an unsung hero, much like a backing vocalist in a musical band. He made many of us whose copy passed through his hands look like masters of the Queen’s language. A fine editor with a eye for detail.”
