Bester Mashayamombe, aged 50, was charged by police with one count of rape and one count of sexual assault by touching.

The alleged attack occurred at the Glenbourne unit, an acute support centre based at Derriford Hospital for people suffering from mental health problems, in February earlier this year.

He is due to appear at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court on 7 October.

Plymouth Community Healthcare, which runs the unit, said it was “actively contributing” to the investigation.

A spokesperson added: “Firstly, we would like to express our sympathies to the patient and her family. Patient care and safety is our primary concern and the team were distressed to learn of the incident.

“As soon as we were made aware of the incident, our staff acted immediately to provide thorough support to the patient and to instigate the appropriate investigation.

“The individual concerned no longer works for the organisation. Plymouth Community Healthcare is actively contributing to the ongoing investigation process.” Plymouth Herald
