Khama sends chill down Mugabe spine

Botswana’s President Ian Khama is now the new chairman of the SADC Heads of State and boy-oh-boy is he a man on a mission. He said he wanted the region “to be a beacon for democracy for Africa, and blasted leaders who cling to power”.

Whenever old dry bones are mentioned in a proverb the old will not sit easy. President Khama’s speech must have caused a stream of ice cold sweat to run down Mugabe’s spine from the base of his neck right down into his pants!

There is no love lost between President Ian Khama and Robert Mugabe. Whilst many other African leaders have allowed themselves to be hoodwinked by Mugabe’s anti-white rhetoric, to President Khama the rhetoric has been water of a duck’s back.

When all the other African leaders turned a blind eye to Mugabe’s blatant vote rigging of the July 2013 Zimbabwe national elections, for example, the Botswana President was the only one who flatly refused to endorse the elections as free and fair.

When Mugabe went to Botswana for the SADC meeting his top priority was to kiss and make up with the incoming chairman; he turned on his charm offensive to the max! He picked his favourite theme, anti-white; it has always worked wonders for him in the past.

In his speech as outgoing SADC chairman, Mugabe told the story of how the Botswana President’s father, Sir Seretse Khama, had been a victim of South African white racism because he had married a white woman.

Now people can see why there was a river of ice cold sweat running down Mugabe’s spine; his flattery did not have any effect on President Khama. Here was a man on a mission to rid the region of dictators and was not going to allow himself to be so easily distracted or deterred.

President Khama slated Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza whose country has been plunged into violence after he decided to run for a third-term although the country’s constitution limited the number of terms to a maximum of two terms.

Mugabe’s view on fixed maximum number of terms is that there should be no such constitutional stipulations. “It is a democracy, if people want a leader to continue, let him continue,” Mugabe said.

President Ian Khama did not address this myth of rigged elections being passed as free, fair and credible elections on this occasion but we all know what he thought of Mugabe’s 2013 rigged elections! Zimbabwe a “democracy”, right!

Mugabe is an incompetent, corrupt and murderous tyrant who has destroyed Zimbabwe’s once healthy and prosperous economy forcing unemployment to soar to the dizzying height of 90% plus and the nation to be so impoverished it cannot supply something as basic as clean running water. Millions of Zimbabweans are leaving in abject poverty whilst millions have been forced to leave the country as political and/or economic refugees!

Mugabe has not just ruined Zimbabwe but the whole region too because the political and economic chaos in Zimbabwe has spilt over into the rest of SADC and beyond!

It is right and proper that at least one SADC leader should have the vision to see the tragic suffering dictators are causing to millions of our people and to have the courage to take this scourge head-on.

President Ian Khama, the people of Zimbabwe and SADC salute you and wish you all the success in your mission to make SADC the beacon of democracy and good governance. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you!

  • Rovambira

Wilbert Mukori , overzealous as usual. Let me remind you that Khama is a midget in SADC politics and as such his views are not important and the collective views of SADC are. Let me challenge you on the onset to state clearly what Khama can do because as far as I am concerned, he has no mandate to influence political events outside Botswana. In fact, he has serious problems at home after having recently lost a by election and his hands are full

    • Rwaivhi

Khama is a stoogie of the West what else can we expect from him. He is simply repeating what Obama said during his last visit to Adis Ababa in Ethiopia. Africa is a continent, within the continent are individual countries governed by their own constitutions, that is democracy. If a leader of a particular country is elected to serve more than two terms how can that be dictatorship, may I remind Khama and those who think alike that Africa is not run by American constitution and hergemony.

      • Patrick Guramatunhu

Zanu PF has blame other people for its only fcuk up in the past and got away with it but not this time!

      • maita

Just see how functional Botswana is versus the revolutionary pan-africanist Zimbabwe ye stone age. Khama is no stooge, he stand up to bullies like your boss. And mind you the words stooge and puppet are the only common words on Zimbabwe alone many civilised nations don’t use those words they are vulgar and bot fit to be published.

        • wilbert

Hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans are in Botswana to escape Mugabe’s corrupt and oppressive Zimbabwe and millions more are in SA, UK, USA, you name. Tyrants and their apologist may say one thing but the people say it all; Zimbabweans have been voting with their feet!

      • Randy Decker

When the people are intimidated or not allowed to vote outright or unfair and untrustworthy people counting the ballots then why bother calling it an election! It IS a DICTATORSHIP. If Zimbabwe’s people want Mugabe then fine.. but it needs to be shown by fair and honest voting! What Mugabe has done to the country is undeniable! How dare you defend a destroyed economy and a 2000% rise in crime and 85-90% unemployment… Starvation, No education no Birth control no hope, no place to go. Your a moron of the highest order if you have any support for anyone like this. Have you seen how the high ranking members of his crew live? They all have new cars every time there is aid for the starving given… That country needs leadership not some bigoted rhetoric that sounds good to some, but accomplishes nothing! Worse… it has caused the ruin of a nation. And that is a fact that can not be denied.

      • iwezimb

Just to rewrite this, that thank goodness Africa is not run by Rwaivhi. While you sit in your plush home and shop for all the nice goodies at TM, think about the poor person who cannot put food on their table or send their children to once prosperous schools. Put your ZANUPF card away and enjoy your 12 year old whiskey while President Khama fights for the rights of REAL Africans

        • wilbert

Well if he still has the 12 year old bottle of whiskey then he will have to drink it very slowly and savour every drop because it is going to be his last bottle. Zimbabwe has not been paying its Embassy staff for eight months or more and, no doubt, CIOs attache will soon feel the heat too!

    • Patrick Guramatunhu

Zimbabwe’s economy is now in total meltdown and the consequences of doing nothing will force SADC to wake up to this reality! Watch this space.

    • Randy Decker

All the more reason to like him. Not easy to stand up to oppressive and ego driven lunatics who are only worried about themselves. Do you know how well Mugabe lives…. He is a total dictator! He destroyed the small but stable aggro-tourism economy that country once had. Hitler came to power by targeting Jews… it gave the people a false target to rally behind and attack and a false blame to unite many of Germany’s downtrodden people after WW 1. Mugabe is only interested in himself, he talks tough but does not care one bit about “his” people…

    • truth

90% unemployment rate nigga shut up!

      • Rovambira

Your fabricated figures that have no correlation with the truth. I do not believe them and anyone whose name is truth.

  • bhauwa

Khama is spot on but as the saying goes “when you speak the truth, you always stand alone”. The fact that he views dictatorship and tyranny from the same perspective as Obama doesn’t make him a puppet, it’s just a matter of, great minds think alike, because progress in the countries they rule speaks volumes.

Mugabe on the other hand is axactly what the writer said, an incompetent, corrupt and murderous tyrant who has destroyed Zimbabwe’s once healthy and prosperous economy forcing unemployment to soar to the dizzying height of 90% plus and the nation to be so impoverished it cannot supply something as basic as clean running water.

Yes, may Khama be very successful in all his endeavours, may he push his agenda for southern African constitutions to be adhered to and make sure no stupid president makes ammendments to suit their own personal needs. He might just bring Mugabe’s rigging sprees to an end.

    • Rovambira

Do not hold your hopes too high because nothing ain’t gonna change. Here is an extract from Mmegi, a Botswana publication that is a much better analysis of Khama’s tenure:-

“Given his background, Africans will surely be expecting too much from a man clearly convoluted by his heritage. His blood maternal relatives are white, English, former imperialists, colonialists kinsmen who harboured dreams of perpetually subjugating Africans for the sake of their mineral resources.

In summary, while President Ian Khama’s workload is already cut out and is mainly to be constrained by the regional body’s template, he is surely expected to reflect the amnesia of the other side of his DNA. He will with no doubt attempt to refocus attention on Zimbabwe to once again solicit praise from the West.

But if his agenda would be solely to soil Zimbabwe’s international standing, then sadly his reign would end up being the most inconsequential given the immediate pertinent issues that he has to grapple with. Lesotho, Madagascar and the DRC beckon for his immediate attention. Surely, his kneejerk diplomatic manoeuvres are to be tested and judged.

He actually has very little space to manoeuvre or exercise his megaphone diplomacy as he has already conceded that he needed to follow-up on the enduring legacy left by his predecessor as illustrated by his acceptance speech when he said: “During his tenure (President Mugabe), SADC adopted the industrialisation strategy and roadmap and I think it’s true to say that it indeed was his idea that we embark on this as well as the Revised Regional Indicative Strategy Development Plan and the extraordinary summit held in April of this year (adopted).”

He applauded the summit’s theme of “Accelerating the industrialisation of SADC economies through transformation of natural endowments and improved human capital,” a theme very much within the vision enunciated by President Mugabe.

It will thus be nothing but mere mischief, recklessness and serious abrogation of duty if President Khama was to abandon the trajectory set by President Mugabe, especially as SADC is currently being lauded for being a regional model for economic cooperation in Africa, particularly in terms of reducing Southern Africa’s dependence on foreigners and creating the basis for self-sustaining development in the post-Cold War era.”

        • Patrick Guramatunhu

The Zanu PF reign of terror is drawing to a close, the economic decline has taken a dangerous turn for the worse and it is now a matter of months before the regime collapse!

      • Patrick Guramatunhu

You are just a racist who is judging President Khama on the basis of the colour of his sink and not what he has done. President Mugabe is a corrupt and murderous tyrant but you support him because he is black.

        • Rovambira

In future kindly read the articles you comment on before expressing opinions that betray your lack of comprehension.

          • Wandile

Rovambira/Devil always trying to sound smart for nothing..nothing. What help is your party giving to people? Liars. There is a lot of selfishness hidded in the guise of loving Zimbabwe by zanu pf.

          • Rovambira

Stop playing God. You are not free of sin yourself. I know for a fact we are all sinners. nly Jesus can save all of us. No one can save themselves

          • wilbert

These is nothing more pathetic than an idiot pretending to be a genius!

          • Rovambira

Just so you know, I do not pretend to to be a genius, I am a certified multi talented genius. I know it and am proud of it.

          • wilbert

I am sure you are a multi talented genius who did Mugabe’s dirty work and are now on the run and has nowhere to hide. If you are so proud of yourself then why are your hiding behind the false name Rovambira?

          • Rovambira

I remain a genius regardless of what my name is. I call myself whatever I like and have the freedom to do so. You seem to be worried about other people’s freedom and given a choice you would curtail that

          • Sekuru Ndoronga

            Genius Rovambira,
Adolf Hitler was not right even though thousands of Germans supported him.
Idi Amin was an example of an evil African dictator even though thousands of Ugandans supported him.
ISIS and their surrogate BOKO etc. are evil and are abusing Islam even if thousands support them.
Robert Gabriel Mugabe has been causing untold misery to Zimbabweans even if you and other privileged Zanoids continue to support him.
One day you will come to realise that ,Yes, ” Nhamo yeumwe inoregererwa sadza” Se zwakaitwa ne ma Gamba akarwira Zimbabwe, kwete zwa iwe newamwe wako mawakuita muchizwiti muri ma Comrades.
The fact that your kind are now living in extreme luxury and driving Very Expensive vehicles, defending the status quo, squandering the riches of the motherland, while millions of Zimbabweans are languishing in poverty is WRONG.

          • wilbert

The economic meltdown is hurting everyone including pretenders like Rovambira, if he drove an expensive car then that was some time ago. He is like Mahachi demanding a golden handshake but knowing fully well that he will never get it.

The only reason people like Rovambira continue to support the Zanu PF regime is to keep their dirty past from coming out. Regime change is now as certain as the sun rising tomorrow and even the self proclaimed genius will not be able to stop the sun rising tomorrow! He will have to explain the human blood on his hands!

Of course, Rovambira you call yourself whatever you please and do as you please all I want from you is an explanation of the innocent people you and Mugabe killed. Your freedom and your rights did not include the right to rig election, to loot, murderer, etc.!

          • Dr .Ras Nkunzi.

more like a certified idiot, genius in filth stirring and ass licking mgabarge………………

          • Patrick Guramatunhu

With the Zimbabwe’s economy in the ICU the Zanu PF regime’s days in power are numbered and so too are the days of those who have earned their living from licking the chefs’ backsides!

      • bhauwa

Mugabe’s idea of industrialising Southern African economies is obviously a positive one, the question is, what is Mugabe doing to realise that goal, especially in Zimbabwe? If nothing then he is just an empty vessel making a lot of noise. Khama can successfully implement that idea if he plays it right and still remain undaunted in his bid to denounce Mugabe as one of the worst dictators this world has ever known.

The quoted article was obviously penned by a Khama critic who was desperately trying to tarnish the man’s image but I suppose he lacked ammunition. It’s not a crime if any African president sees eye to eye with the West. African countries that have good relations with the West tends to be successful compared to those who look East, maybe either of those two sides deals treacherously with their dupes.

        • wilbert

Idiots like Rovambira believe we must hate the West because Mugabe says so even if that means denying ourselves. Mugabe has denied the people of Zimbabwe their basic right to a meaningful vote under the pretext that the West want regime change and therefore no patriotic black Zimbabwean should want a meaningful vote seeking to remove Zanu PF regardless how corrupt and incompetent the regime has proven to be.

Idiots like Rovambira now judge everything on the basis of what the West wants and not what they want. No wonder the nation is in this mess, with such naive and gullible voters, tyrants like Mugabe have a field day!

          • bhauwa

Exactly my point bro, China and Russia both have bilateral relations with America and Europe but a tiny economy like ours should look East in everything just coz Mugabe and his friends are not comfortable doing business with the West. That’s a lot of nonsense, I say.

      • maita

So what has his maternal grandparents to do with the melt down of Zim’s economy, for your own information Botswana is moving forward very fast as you move backwards at terrific speed.

    • Patrick Guramatunhu

Mugabe has done a great job of digging his own political grave and all we need to do is bury him!

  • Cde Viper

Well written article Mr Wilbert Mukori. As a patriotic Zimbabwean citizen I have no qualms about saying pasi naMatibili nezvimbwasungata zvake!!

  • Patrick Guramatunhu

The last month has seen 20 000 workers losing their jobs and there are more in the pipeline, for a country with over 90% plus out of work this is very serious news, it shows Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown is very serious. SADC will need to act very quickly or they will be overtaken by events!

  • Sellassie Army

Outsiders can only do so much. The onus is on us Zimbabweans. As long as we remain docile nothing will change. As is it right now we should be on the streets Egyptian style rejecting Mugabe’s governance and his policies. Only then can outsiders be compelled to help without being accused of the internal politics of Zimbabweans.By us rising and rejecting Mugabe’s rule, outsiders can gain somewhat legitimacy to help and intervene. Remember for every African leader who wants democracy there are ten who want autocracy. Remember some of these leaders use their wealth as personal purses. It is the lack of leadership in all of us that fail us.I did not see anyone of us join Ital Dzamara in protest. No wonder the brother was snatched in daylight.90% unemployment where are the youths in all this. The country is rich enough for us to rise again but the longer we do nothing the tougher it’s gona be to fix.Remember our elders are busy signing 100 year leases with Chinese.

    Jah guide.Sellassie I know.

    • wilbert

The Egyptians had their hour on the street but where is the country now; back under the same military rule they tried to end. I am not saying we should not be on the street but only when we have a plan of action, when we know what democratic reforms were want and how they are to be implemented.

      • Sellassie Army

Yes brethren that’s true.We should have a plan. What I lament most I’d that we talk the talk but we never walk the walk.We as a people we are not stepping up.As of now we should have a government in waiting.Nowadays there are many ways to vote .One of the ways is the internet. We could set up a web where the people could petition and choose the next group of leaders. The Mugabe regime can not control the web.Second me on such an idea.By choosing a government in waiting we would be able to avoid the Egyptian, Lybian mistakes.Kah guide my brother.

        • wilbert

Interesting idea. Anything that would get the people to think for themselves would be a great start because we need to end this culture of people who follow blindly like sheep.

Getting people to understand that MDC betrayed them has been a challenge and the fight has been tough but worthwhile. The fight has not been won yet as there are still some people who simple refuse to see the reality before their own eyes.

Sorry where did Khama exactly attack Mugabe. I am reading the article and all I can see are your expectations of what Khama may do. Which is nothing FYI. Stupid article. Even for me someone who wants change in Zim

    • wilbert

“He (President Khama) said he wanted the region “to be a beacon for democracy for Africa, and blasted leaders who cling to power”. For a tyrant like Mugabe that is a red rag to a bull!

If you understand punctuation you will see that that is not a direct quotation . The writer of the article wasted our time

        • Patrick Guramatunhu

President Khama wants SADC to be a beacon of democracy and that did not sit well with President Mugabe. You can say what you like but that is a fact!
