Eye witnesses said the number of people killed may rise as some of the occupants were critically injured.

The commuter omnibus was travelling towards the city centre when it collided with the truck which was turning right into the high way.

Police spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the accident.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary where the identification process is underway.

Five of the 16 injured are reported to be in a critical condition and are also detained at Parirenyatwa Hospital.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Charamba says preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was caused by speeding on the part of the commuter omnibus driver.

“The skid marks suggest that the commuter omnibus driver was speeding and failed to control the vehicle and collided with the heavy truck which was turning right into the Bulawayo Road,” she said.

The area has become a black spot according to people who live in the area.

According to the police, most of the road accidents that occur on the roads have been attributed to human error, part of it due to driving under the influence of alcohol.

The use of defective vehicles is also a contributory factor. ZBC
