MDC-T upholds election boycott resolution
The MDC-T national council has upheld its 2014 congress resolution not to participate in any elections without significant electoral reforms.
Party leader Morgan Tsvangirai addressed a press conference at Harvest House on Friday where he reiterated the congress resolution.
“We have considered congress resolutions regarding the recall of 21 MPs from parliament and council was very emphatic that the position taken in October that reforms must precede any election in Zimbabwe has been vindicated by reports regarding the few by-elections held recently which were shambolic,” said Tsvangirai.
By-elections recently held in Chirumanzu-Zibagwe and Mount Darwin West were marred by allegations of intimidation, anomalies in the voters’ roll and rigging.
MDC-T caused the recall of 21 MPs from the MDC Renewal Team, arguing that they must step down since they were no longer part of the opposition movement on whose ticket they won the elections in 2013.
Added Tsvangirai: “Council was unanimous that, as MDC, we will uphold the congress resolution (to boycott elections). It will be fatal to take part in by-elections or any other form of election until reforms are done.”
