The body of Nhlanhla Dube of Mbawula area under Chief Maduna in Filabusi, was discovered at Gwanda Mayor, Councillor Knowledge Ndlovu’s plot about 80km from Gwanda Town on Friday by a cattle herder.

The corpse was found floating in a stream behind a cattle pen, with serious head injuries.

Although Dube’s relatives could not be reached for comment, sources close to the investigations said Dube went missing from her Filabusi home on October 5, this year and walked until she reached the plot.

“The relatives said they left Dube at home while they had gone to church and on their return found her missing. Initially, they thought she had gone to fetch water. However, she never returned and when they started searching for her, they found a wheelbarrow and a water container abandoned at a nearby dam.

“They conducted a search together with other villagers to no avail only to be told on October 10, that an unidentified woman was found dead in West Nicholson.

“When they went there, they discovered it was indeed Dube’s body,” said the source.

Chronicle visited the plot yesterday and Themba Moyo, 18, the herdsman, said when he discovered Dube’s body, he rushed to tell his colleagues.

He said they had earlier seen Dube roaming around, carrying some sticks and bottles and talking to herself.

“Before we could notify elders, the plot owner Clr Ndlovu arrived and we took him to the scene. He is the one who made a report to the police at Tods Police Base. This dog, Lihlo, had started eating the body,” said Moyo.

Clr Ndlovu yesterday confirmed that a dead body was found at his A1 plot.

“What I saw was horrible. We suspect she died that same day. The dogs had eaten part of her body and it was not a pleasant sight at all.

“I believe the woman had gone to the plot seeking water and food but found no one there resulting in her dying,” he said.

Clr Ndlovu said he was contemplating having the dog killed as seeing it would always evoke bad memories. He could not be drawn into speculating on what may have happened to Dube’s eyes. The Chronicle
