Moyo denies gunning for VP post

MDC-T national chairperson, Lovemore Moyo, Wednesday rubbished reports that he wants to challenge Thokozani Khupe for MDC-T’s vice-presidency and that he was “not shocked” by the in-fighting in the party as this was usual when a political party is about to hold an elective congress.
MDC-T is due to hold its congress next month.
Last week there were speculative media reports linking Moyo to the race for the VP position, but yesterday he denied that he was in the race.
“I hear Harare has nominated me for national chairman and its the same with Chitungwiza and I have accepted,” said Moyo.
“People write what they want. Did you hear me saying I want to be vice-president?”
The former speaker of the House of Assembly said it was not unusual when going to congress to have media speculation “on who wants what position” adding that problems that haunted Bulawayo in the nomination process leading to the MDC-T congress were common during such a period of “contestation for power”.
“We are preparing for congress and it’s not shocking,” said Moyo.
“It’s that time of the season where people align themselves to particular individuals and try to push for them to get positions. Sometimes some fall by the way-side and others get bruised in the process.”
At the weekend, the nomination process for the MDC-T Bulawayo provincial chairship post — which fell vacant after the resignation of Makokoba legislator Gorden Moyo — by the party’s Bulawayo East district was marred by chaos resulting in it being abandoned.
However, Moyo said he was yet to receive a report concerning the skirmishes.
“I haven’t received a report about what happened during the weekend,” he said.
“I am told members of the national executive tasked with looking at the process have compiled a report and it is in my office in Harare, but as I speak to you I am in Bulawayo.
“It’s true that I am in Bulawayo to look at the issue, but I have not yet received the report.”
The tussle for the Bulawayo provincial chairship is between MP for Bulawayo Central Dorcas Sibanda, who is currently acting in that position, Senator for Makokoba-Mzilikazi, Matson Hlalo, Bulawayo-East member of parliament, Thabitha Khumalo and Bulawayo deputy mayor Gift Banda. The Zimbabwe Mail
