Phiri was crowned on June 14 in an extravagant event which cost a record half a million dollars.

When contacted for comment, Phiri said she would disclose the reasons in due course.

“I will let you know when the time comes; right now I can confirm that I have stepped down. As the Trust indicated, it is personal, and I would appreciate it if we keep it that way for now.”

Miss Zimbabwe Trust Chairperson, Mary Chiwenga said they were in shock and that everything would have to be discussed with the Trust.

“These developments are still fresh, and to be honest, I cannot give you anything on who is going to replace her. The Trust will have to decide on who will replace her. Also on the prizes we cannot say anything yet like I said, we are still to sit down and discuss,” she said.

In a statement later issued by the Miss Zimbabwe Trust, Chiwenga stated “personal” reasons as the cause for stepping down.

“Due to circumstances unforeseen at the time of holding the Miss Zimbabwe pageant on June 14 and which circumstances are peculiar and personal to the winner of the pageant Miss Thabiso Phiri, it has become imperative after her disclosure of the said circumstances that she steps down as the queen. It must be emphasised that the decision by Miss Thabiso Phiri to step down is personal to her and no duress or undue influence is brought to bear upon her in making this decision.

“While the Miss Zimbabwe Trust regrets this turn of events after putting so much resources into the event leading to her being crowned, the circumstances leading to her stepping down are a prerequisite to both Miss Zimbabwe and Miss World pageants.

“The Trust thanks Miss Thabiso Phiri for her own voluntary disclosure of the said facts and circumstances. The trust is making all efforts at this time to make a natural placement to Miss Thabiso Phiri which placement shall represent Zimbabwe in London at the Miss world pageant.

“Miss Phiri has asked for privacy at this time and hopefully this shall be observed by all and sundry in order for her dignity to be respected,” Mubaiwa said.

Miss Zimbabwe had been facing financial problems and the pageant was not held last year. Daily News
