We are getting reports that Justice George Chiweshe has postponed to Wednesday, the date on which he will hear the court application to stop the special voting for members of the uniformed forces in Zimbabwe. This is despite the special voting itself ending today (Monday).
According to MDC-T Secretary General Tendai Biti who is also the Finance Minister in the coalition government “figures show that 69 000 police officers applied for special voting when the country only has about 40 000 police officers.”
“As Treasury, I can tell you we are not paying 69 000 police officers, it is almost double those on the country’s payroll which is something questionable. The special voting vetting exercise is taking place at the Harare International Conference Centre and the place is heavily militarised,” Biti said.
Morgan Komichi, MDC-T deputy national chairman, said in his court application the number of officers casting their ballot has been vastly inflated, yet the case was initially set down for hearing by Chiweshe — who ran the 2008 vote — for Monday, a day after the special vote had already started.
But now with the case set for Wednesday it is now just academic.
The application cites Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) as the first respondent, co-ministers of Home Affairs Theresa Makone and Kembo Mohadi as second respondents, police chief Augustine Chihuri and the police force as third respondents and Finance minister Tendai Biti as the fourth respondent.
In 2008, Chiweshe was the head of the discredited Electoral Commission that withheld presidential election results for weeks, amid reports the period was used to manipulate and massage the figures that denied Morgan Tsvangirai an outright victory over a shocked Mugabe.
