Mapfumo on trials with Platinum Stars

South African premiership side Platinum Stars have taken Township Rollers midfielder Brian Mapfumo on trial as they seek a replacement for Enocent Mkhabela. Mapfumo, who is Zimbabwean but has been playing in Botswana this past season, will stay with Dikwena this week.

“Platinum Stars have been monitoring his progress ever since he moved to Botswana six months ago and they indicated that they wanted a closer look at him,” the player’s agent, George Deda said.

“So, he left for the trials which will last one week. Mapfumo himself is thrilled by the prospect because the same route to the Premiership was used by Conrad Whitby, who is now at Polokwane City.”

The 25-year-old Mapfumo, who has a single cap for his country, also has experience of playing in CAF club competitions with Monomotapa, who he served in his homeland before joining Rollers. Stars’ geographical proximity to Botswana means they make regular scouring missions to Gaborone.

They will be hopeful any move for Mapfumo is as successful as their acquisition of Mogakolodi Ngele, also from Rollers, at the start of the season. The young attacking midfielder was one of the stars of the PSL last season. Mzansi Football and KickOff.com
