Open letter to President Robert Mugabe

Your Excellency,

I write this letter with a bleeding heart, a heart not so long ago would skip a beat at the mere mention of your name and the name Zimbabwe. A name synonymous with the struggle for freedom from oppression, racism and unnecessary killing of human life regardless of skin colour.

Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe
Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe

I don’t want to go into a lot of events that are currently happening now in the country but I want to draw a comparison of what you stood for in the 1970’s up to the 1980 campaign trail.

Something that made us as youth then leave our families and take up the gun, and many youths ride on top of Salisbury United to come and listen to you without being beaten or threatened by the now so called born free comrades.

I want to remind you of what you said in 1979 and I quote, ” we are fighting a just war for people so that they can be free to choose anyone who they so feel free to lead them, and exercise their rights without any hindrances.”

Now if we bring this to today, have we really achieved this? I have seen people spend the whole day trying in vain to register to vote so that they can exercise the same rights we fought for only to see Mudede and his people throw the spanners in the works. If i can not exercise my right as a citizen of Zimbabwe, whose rights are so supreme that everyone should live by them?

What is really important power or people? Whose interests are being covered here if Chinamasa and crew can play games with our rights? What is being covered up to the extent that ZANU PF has to win at all cost? Are we that blind to the corruption that is happening today?

The lining of pockets by Kasukuwere, Mpofu, Chiwenga, Chihuri, Chombo just to mention a few? Are we all the crew that went to war going to live forever and rule Zimbabwe? Are these bornfrees not capable of running things for themselves?

What legacy are we leaving to this young generation? That you have to cheat, lie, oppress your own kin and steal in order to stay in power?

Surely you have brought shame to the liberation struggle. I didn’t fight the war in order to beat my relatives in order to stay in power. I did not fight to see my sons turned into thugs by Kasukuwere, who go about beating the elderly so that Zanu can stay in power and you and your cronies continue to loot.

Do you sleep peacefully knowing that someone is being beaten to further your rigging cause? Because I have failed to sleep for the past four and half years.

I fought for equal distribution of resources, free movement, free association, free expression, right to education, right to choose who i want to lead me, employment, land and all those things we were deprived of under the Smith regime and it is a shame that you have become worse than him and you have stooped so low in order to stay in power and save the interest of a very few.
