The case against the gospel of prosperity

A story is told of a dog that died. The owner loved his dog so dearly that he went to his pastor and said, “Pastor, my dog has died this morning. I have one request which, if you grant, I would be grateful forever. Please, could there be a service for the poor creature?”

The Pastor replied, “No, we can’t have service for animals in the church. The church is for human beings and not for pets. However, there is one of the new churches mushrooming down the road, try them, maybe they will accept such a request.”

The dejected man rose from the chair and shook his head as he headed for the door on his way out. Just as he was about to leave he enquired, “Pastor, but do you think at that church they will accept a donation of  three thousand dollars for personal use by their pastor in return for the burial service?”

The Pastor shouted, “Blood of Jesus! Come back! Why didn’t you tell me all along that the dog was a Christian? Let’s have the service right way. Where is the dog?” The story may sound funny but contained therein is a deadly and Satan-induced cancer that is eating the unsuspecting church of today.

Whereas the shepherd and follower of Christ of the past focused on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and repentance, today’s follower has been schooled to believe that the focus of the Christian is the acquisition of worldly wealth.

The prosperity Gospel teaches that God wants Christians to be prosperous financially, physically and spiritually. This Gospel has taken centre stage influencing millions of people and has had startling success because of what it promises the believer.

Marketers of this gospel have touched the hearts of millions of eager listeners seeking to escape from the jaws of poverty. This gospel is premised on the idea that God wants you to be rich and to have excess in your life and that your physical possessions indicate your spiritual worthy.

Below I quoted live recorded statements by prosperity preachers.

·          “Today’s service is on Seven steps to prosperity …”

·          “If you are still a lodger then you need to understand that poverty is not from God.”

·          “Receive your house, receive your miracle…”

·          “The very moment you stepped in this church, poverty and sickness have departed from your family.”

It’s undeniable that the Bible has many scriptures which tell of God’s blessings. However, the tragedy of those who peddle the gospel of prosperity is their myopic focus on these scriptures and reluctance to understand the core objective of the Gospel.

Did Jesus impliedly or explicitly teach that His Gospel would also be a tool for earthly prosperity? Is the prosperity gospel the urgent message that the world needs in these last days? Suppose there is a father who has a family to feed and one day brings a bar of chocolate to the excitement of his family.

The next day the man brings two more bars of chocolate and again the family is happy. The father increases the chocolate bars he takes home in the next few days much to the delight of his family.

Meanwhile, his home has run out of the basic food like mealie-meal and oil yet surprisingly, the man of the house continues to bring more chocolate. Consequently the family reaches a point where all that is left for food is chocolate.

The adamant man continues to hoard more boxes of chocolate out rightly ignoring the basic food critical for the survival of his family. Eventually, the children get wasted and emaciated from undernourishment but the father does not relent. What do you make of such a man?

Personally, I do not see anything wrong with a father bringing goodies for his family. The problem arises when all that a father brings is chocolate. Bringing chocolate becomes wrong if not evil because it now threatens the very survival of the family.

Chocolate becomes detrimental to the children if they are lacking basic food which nourishes. That illustration aptly prescribes why the prosperity gospel has become dangerous.

The prosperity gospel, just like the chocolate, has become a detrimental force used by the devil to distract Christians from feeding on the life-giving message of salvation and repentance from sin.

Prosperity is the chocolate in the life of a Christian and salvation knowledge is the basic food critical for the survival of the Christian. I maintain that the gospel of prosperity has since become an evil because it’s the only thing that Christians are bombarded with ahead of the priceless message of salvation today.

Chances are nine against one that the sermon on your TV right now is teaching you about prosperity. Ministers have become so intoxicated with preaching wealth with the effect that the poor feel out of place in today’s churches.

A theme study of the Bible demands that we do not focus on isolated verses but search for what Jesus said about wealth in general. It is the work of the devil to single out one or two scriptures and then twist them to deceive millions of people.

The evidence against the gospel of prosperity is simply overwhelming. Jesus Christ spoke against the gospel of prosperity in many ways as follows:

  • Do not build for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and   rust can destroy (Matt 6:19,20)
  • ·             Foxes and birds have some where to lay their heads but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head (Matt 8:20)
  • ·             But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort (Luke6;24)
  •  It is easier for a camel to enter through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven (Matt 19;24)
  •  …You cannot serve God and money (Matt 6; 24).
  • ·             How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.( Luke 18:12 )

The Prosperity gospel teaches that you need material prosperity in your life. It doesn’t teach that primarily you need prosperity in your ‘spiritual’ life, which the Bible teaches. It is my strong conviction that the emergence and popularity of the gospel of prosperity today is by no means an accident.

Remember, the Bible tells us that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against principalities and forces of darkness (Ephesians 6; 12). The prosperity gospel was designed to serve a real practical purpose. The real purpose of this gospel is to remove focus from the real matter of this world.

It is designed to overshadow the message of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The prominence given to it relegates the Second Coming of Christ to the peripheries. When was the last time you heard a speaker preach of the return of Christ?

The real message which the world needs urgently is the repentance and salvation of mankind. The wealth gospel is earthly-focused and makes the return of Christ a non event. Satan obviously has a field day to see Christians who are mindful of earthly riches, which Christ rejected.

The devil laughs with satisfaction to hear messages of earthly prosperity reverberating from Christian pulpits.

The spiritually enlightening story of the rich young ruler (Matt 19:22) was not accidentally put in the Bible. That story is well meant and sums up the case against the wealth gospel.

Christ knew human nature too well that once the pursuit of wealth becomes our goal in life then the devil has got us in his net just like the young ruler. Wealth is a god on its own. Christ would not have told the rich young man that it was impossible to serve God and money if money were not a master in its own right.

For example, if someone were to say, “A football player cannot register with both Arsenal and Chelsea.” That statement automatically tells you that both Arsenal and Chelsea are soccer teams. Christ wouldn’t have made the comparison between God and money if one of them where not a god.

Money is a master which demands to be served just like God. The rich young ruler had faithfully kept the Commandments but his heart was embedded on his wealth. He valued his wealth so much that he was willing to lose Christ for it. The point which Christ was making is this; you cannot serve God and money.

You will love one and hate the other. Prosperity preachers and seekers likewise are striving after material things of the world instead of God. The wealth gospel stands in stark contrast with Christ’s advice, “…a man’s life does not consist in his earthly possessions.”(Luke 12; 15)

Sadly, the peddlers of the gospel of prosperity remain headstrong urging millions of people into rejecting Christ’s counsel and courting destruction. They continue to teach that affluence is an indicator of godliness.

On the contrary, Christ was an embodiment of humility and he identified with the poor. He even had to make the point by being born of a poor carpenter yet he was God.

The most misleading and most mischievous belief to come out of the gospel of prosperity is the promise that being born again spells an end to poverty, pain, and suffering. Ever seen notices in the local press where people give testimonies that they were always sick and poor before they turned to Christ?

This belief is definitely not from God; at least not the God of the Bible. God never promised man that once they convert to Christianity they become immune to the sufferings of the present world. To the contrary, Paul’s conversion to Christianity marked the beginning of untold suffering for him.

Paul had enjoyed fame and belonged to the elite group which persecuted and prosecuted Christians. The very moment Paul turned to Christianity he was dogged by countless tragedies.

Reading through his horrible experiences in his letters, you will learn that: he was flogged countless times, fought wild beasts at Ephesus on his mission to spread the Word and endured inhuman jail conditions all because of Christ.

Paul is believed to have died in prison yet he stands as an iconic figure in Christianity. In fact, concerning those who flock to stadiums to preach and seek prosperity Paul left a message in one of his letters.

He wrote; “People who want to get rich fall into temptation and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.”(1Timothy 6:9)

Any man who sets his eyes on the cross and commits to follow Christ will square with temptation and hardship. Christ admonished His disciples that“…If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first (John 15; 18).”

The false impression given by the prosperity gospel that this sinful world is our home where we ought to build mansions and drive obscenely expensive cars is an outright lie straight from the pit of hell.  Jesus Christ himself endured excruciating pain in this world.

He had to endure the betrayal of friends and those he healed. If there was any Man who could have amassed wealth by use of miracles and attain earthly prosperity beyond measure that Man was none other than Jesus Christ. He could have led the way and enriched Himself as an example for His followers.

With an average of five thousand people following Him, He could have easily wrecked in thousands of dollars daily in offerings and buy all the gold of this world but did He? Today’s Christian ought to realize that there is a battle for the control of his mind   that is going on.

This is the last hour. Take heed that no one deceives you.

John 10:10… Jesus came that we ve life to the full. So living in poverty is living to the full, not able to send yo kids to school or feed them is it living to the full. Do u really know what it means to ve Jesus King of Kings in yo life. Hosea 4:6 my people perish coz of lack of knowledge . Do u understand the meaning of the word ” blessed” Abraham I will bless u so that u will become a blessing . If I ve money I will be able to look after opharns or the poor or send poor kids to school. I will improve my community. Poverty is an enemy to any society so preach against it Pastors keep it up. African mentality u r just sad to c others doing well in life

      • Gurundoro

Learnmore does not say that poverty is right in his article. He writes to castigate con-artists who are masquarreding as prophets and are stealing from the poor using the gospel. You know what he is talking about. As it happens that religion is the opium of the masses, you and other beneficiaries of this prosperity gospel are taking full advantage of the desperately poor who believe all the lies about ending their poverty. Why do you ask people to pay money before they benefit from the gospel of prosperity? And apart from those people you pay to give false testimonies, how many people have actually seen their situation improve? Which African mentality are you talking about? You thought nobody would read through your lies because you think all African people are stupid. And what kind of mentality is that, Western?

        • Eye opener

It is only the devil who is uncomfortable with testimonies of how God is prospering Christians. The Bible says, ” they [Christians] overcame him [Satan] because of the blood of the Lamb, and because of the word of their testimony” (Rev 12: 11). Satan knows how damaging testimonies are to his kingdom, that’s why he tries to silence the testimonies of the goodness of the Lord Jesus Christ.

          • razaro!

I think you are missing the point my bro maybe deliberately….the question is Is it right for the pastor/prophet to enrich themselves by plundering church finances…..do you think Jesus would have bought himself a Bentley using church money? If your answer is NO then you guys need to change your ways!! God bless

          • Bhora Resimbi

I suppose you are privy to the books of accounts of this church to know for sure that the money for the Bentley came from the church? Either that or you are just plain lying, which makes you fall in line with the Father of lies. So tell us: have you seen this church’s accounts or not? If not then please just zip it

          • razaro

The Lord has given me the eyes to see what these people do behind closed doors. I don’t seek to argue with anyone. Those who are in the game know what I’m talking about. Can a man rob The Lord; NO….Can a man hide anything from The Lord; NO!! You need to pray about these things and they will be revealed to you by The Lord. If in your heart of hearts, you believe you are doing the right thing, then go ahead and multiply your act. But, if you know you are not right before The Lord in these things that you do, this is the time to repent…Its never too late. God loves you. Peace be with you

Luke 6 v 20: “Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God”

        • Rich Dad, Poor Dad

Get lost blessed are the poor in spirit

          • razaro!

….but surely if you were a CHRISTIAN you would NOT insult people you dont know on a public forum. What type of Christian are you who insult people like you are doing simply bcoz they dont share your view? No one at all is against PROSPERITY for starters….you need to read the articles again. You insult the poor calling them THIEVES and you call yourself a Christian?…you said you were poor when you were growing up…..were you also a thief bcoz you were poor? You are surely NOT a CHRISTIAN my bro…!! God bless

          • Rich Dad, Poor Dad

I am the staunchest christian. If you were a Christian you will not bash rich people like you are supporting Zuze. Poor people should not be given a chance to bash the rich without expecting the rich to bash back. I am not rich at all but we need to know that being poor is not a license to ask the rich to stop preaching prosperity. Being poor does not give one the moral highground to stop pple from buying expensive vehicles. I have seen poor people who sleep as early as 9 pm and wake up at 8 am the following morning and I have seen hardworking rich people who sleep at 2 am and by 6 am they are up again. I have seen prosperity preachers sleep for 4 hrs a day because they are praying for the sick, reading, writing, fasting travelling to reach out to souls. In the process God blesses them with material wealth and the a poor person from no where starts telling these people to stop living luxuriously. My God this demon called poverty even betrays pple into thinking that they alon can tell others to donate. Wake UP, WAKE hard and be rich and teach these prosperity preachers how to give. Stop whinning. Viva Prosperity – God will open floodgates of heaven for them

      • Balanced Gospel the Answer

Often we argue from the stand point of what we get from our mistranslated bibles and we get completely lost. When the Lord JC said these words (John 10:10), the word He used for life is zoe, which is a Greek for spiritual life, not bio (physical life). Now, prosperity gospel has tended to be an affront because there has been a strong emphasis on bio at the expense of zoe. Otherwise, where there is balance there wouldn’t be any dispute.

        • Fayafaya

Zoe is defined as “life as God lives it.” How does God live His life? Broke? Hardly. The streets of heaven are paved with pure gold

          • razaro

…..even The Devil quotes SCRIPTURE to defend his ways!! What is your heart saying to all this? Please do NOT let down The Lord who trusted you to do HIS work!!

  • Logic Mtetwa-Mutepfa

This is the best critique of prosperity gosperity gospel ever. You have deep understanding of the Bible, Learnmore.

    • Yola

I disagree, I think Learnmore has more to learn.

      • Logic Mtetwa-Mutepfa

Then tackle him using your learned understanding of the Holy Bible. I await your point-by-point attack on Learnmore’s arguments!

        • Rich Dad, Poor Dad

Learmore still has a lot to learn including unlearning poverty memntality and misinterpretation of the bible. He can still go to heaven poor like Lazarus but we the sons of God will go hom blessed like Abraham and rich like Jacob who planted in the yr of drought and reaped a hundredfold.

          • razaro!

….but Jacob had to go to Egypt bcoz he had nothing to eat, right?? And even though Jacob had nothing to eat, he still blessed the pharaoh who had everythn, right!! I thnk its you mr Rich Dad Poor Dad who still has a lot to learn!! Lol

          • Fayafaya

“I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread” (Ps 37:25).

Jacob went to Egypt at the request of his son Joseph. he 5 years of famine had not yet begun. This was Joseph planning ahead for his parents. Jacob was NEVER hungry. You contradict Psalm 37:25, and you shouldn’t be doing that

          • razaro

            The Lord rebuke you

  • Zuze

Unfortunately some people have already missed your point. Perhaps if you could write a part 2 in which you define what prosperity is in terms of the Bible and also explain why all the “friends of God” like Abraham had so much whether. Also explain how the gospel can be preached without financial resources to spread it, as well as giving biblical explanations on how to identify the true gospel. It would be most welcome as you seem to have a good understanding of the subject. One question was Jesus poor and were can I find the scripture to indicate his wealth status coz my Bible says as he is so are we in this life and internal life in the next life(1 John 4 vs 17 ). I am trying to understand this. Learnmore I think I can learn more from you. Please also read Galatians 6 vs 1 to 10, I believe it is what a christian should be like, what do you think.

  • Rich dad, Poor dad

Zuze, I do not normally take offense at peddlers of self belief like you do but when you live in a country with 72% of the people who are deemed poor (Check World Bank, Govt of Zim statistics) and you are against prosperity I begin to wonder the difference between you and the demons that torment people limiting them from achieving their pinnacle in life. No one has ever accussed Universities for teaching business management, financial Mgt, Marketing Mgt, Real Estate, etc, but the moment a pastor teaches the same things pple cry fowl.

Cry my beloved country for sorry poor people who do not know the way out of their limiting conditions. A story is always told of slaves who think that everyone is a slave and there are no options but to serve a limiting Master, in your case Satan himself who wants to see poor souls that are easy to manipulate.

    • Logic Mtetwa-Mutepfa

Come on Rich dad, Poor dad (Robert T. Kiyosaki) please focus on Learnmore Zuze’s arguments which make scriptural sense and spare us all those other issues about universities offering business courses etc. Universities and churches are different and they do not necessarily serve the same purpose. Why do you think Satan has taken possession of other people’s lives without any valid evidence? Remove the log in your eye Rich dad!

      • Rich Dad, Poor Dad

Universities are teaching and pastors are teaching what is the difference, they serve the same purpose in configuring they way pple think. Poverty is a demon. Job was blessedly rich with material blessing until the devil started tormenting him for with poverty. So what is the difference between the devil and poverty. Abraham was blessed. Poor Zimbabwean want pastors to be quiet on riches. No wonder why our bad economy is 173 out 185 countries, we have economic refugees in neighbouring countries. I have no log in my eye. I will not name call you. I will continue supporting the gospel of prosperity. You and Zuze are the pple who have never paid school fees for poor relatives – we know what to do with our money – helping others hence we want prosperity.
I went to prosperous Catholic Schools and I was vaccinated in their well resourced hospitals. That is prosperity. Each sunday I used to go to their big churches. Such things can only show prosperity by the Grand Old Church (GOC).

        • razaro!

…and the Roman Catholic priests used to ride in Lamborghinis and Bentleys?….

that pope-mobile is a security car and the 4×4 they used were “church-property” they were never registered in their names…and the houses they lived in were in the name of the church and they are still their being used by different ppl…is that what is happening with you guys? • Fayafaya

How do you know so much abt the financial affairs of these ministries you criticize? Have you looked at their books of accounts? Have you seen any of the title deeds to the properties you allege are being misappropriated? How do you know where the funds came from for any one pierce of property in question? If you haven’t got any facts to prove misappropriation, then wisdom demands that you remain silent until you have evidence

          • razaro

I don’t need to see any proof with my human eyes…because The Lord has given me the eyes to see what you do behind closed doors!! Repent and be served…its NOT too late. God bless you my bro…fear The Lord!! God bless

We as Christians need checks and balances….lets not glorify abuse of The Lord’s flock!! This is my last comment to your posts. • Rich Dad, Poor Dad

It unfortunate you are going. I know the Nigerian Pastor with the Jet I worked in Nigeria. Another one has recently bought one. My former boss hada jet too. My professor had a jet too. I went to my Prosperity Church at lunch and I was touched by a young man’s story who was given $10 on a monday – he bought 5 belts at $2 each and started vending. He had $100 by end of week. May the God of Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah bless you manifestly. I am a Development Practitioner by profession and I fight poverty with a passion. Have worked with many international organisations and in zim I have been in the trenches at Magaba, Mupedzanhamo, Mbare Msika, Musika wehuku in Mtare, Sekhusile in Byo, Kudzanai Bus terminus in Gweru, Sir I have seen poverty but I have also seen how a determined pple can pull themselves from poverty. I will email you when the time is right Bro….I urge you to do what you do in good faith. But the truth is NOT everyone of these pedlars of the gospel of prosperity is genuine, most of them are crooks and The Lord is NOT happy with them. I told you already what The Lord is saying and what He will do to them. You may doubt this but here is the deal. The Lord tells me that there are celebrations in Kenya today but pray for the Kenyans for there is going to be strife in that land before the dust settles. I tell you this before any of your prophets tells you about it. If this prophecy comes to pass, remember what I said earlier on..The Lord is NOT happy with most of the preachers of the gospel of prosperity because “they have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit”…you be a good boy, son and “Peace be with you”. ps :I am NOT a prophet, I’m just an Evangelist!! So because yo friend sleeps on the floor that means u ve to sleep on the floor as well. U want all church goers to be equal even at schools in a class u ve the same teacher teaching u the same things and not all who will pass. Remember the story of the seed and the sower. I c no reason why the pastor should suffer- what is a Ferrari compared to the blind receiving sight what is a Ferrari to b delivered from demons. My friend a Ferrari is nothing compared to a spiritual breakthrough – ask some of us who ve been in deep problems for a decade. Pastors r helping us beyond words flesh eyes only c Ferrari and turn away from the work of Pastors. Jesus even said the poor u will always ve meaning Nommatter how u help other pple they will never change but that shld not stop u preaching coz others r not benefiting. Most pple think that it is church money that pastors use to buy these cars – I am in ministry that doesn’t allow pastors to handle church money and time after time u c pple coming back with gifts after getting their breakthrough appreciating pastors. Do u know how much it cost to ve a church conference do u know how it cost to b on TV do u know how it cost to send a missionary do u know how it cost to run a ministry. My friend I am a church secretary I am involved daily. Don’t focus on money coming in ask the church to show u their expenses. What God gave us on the cross is more than a Ferrari he is not bothered about that a Ferrari is a bread crumb to God

        • razaro!

Mark, let the focus of the Gospel be salvation and not money money money!! I have no issues with paying in money to meet the running costs of various arms of the church, but I am against the so called prophets using church money to enrich themselves and their families…I am glad you admitted you are one of those handling church finances…Id always suspected you were part of the lot…you need to ask yourself why your pastor/prophet is using church money to buy himself and his wife nice cars, houses, jewelry etc unlike the Roman Catholic clergy you mentioned earlier on!! Did Jesus ever take any money from the congregation to buy himself a donkey or horse to use as transport? No he didn’t. Satan “akapfunya chisero mamuri!!”….you need help guys

          • Eye opener

For everything there is a time and a season. Nobody said the message of repentence should not be preached. In fact, the reason why material prosperity is now preached is because it is the season to do so. Most people (especially in Zim) have heard the message of repentance and thus gave their lives to Christ. Not only that, most of them have received water baptism and been filled with the Holy Ghost. Most of them have listened to the preachings on holiness and they are striving to live that way. But most Christians in Africa have been brought from poor backgrounds and still live in poverty. This is where the preachers are now teaching the Christians to renew their minds and embrace the blessing of Abraham which maketh rich with no sorrow attached to it.

            Paul put it this way:
“Heb 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
Heb 6:2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
Heb 6:3 And this will we do, if God permit”.

Therefore, it’s true that the Lord Jesus is coming soon, but God’s desire for the African Christians in particular is that they may continually live in His full supply (especially materially and physically). This is the same desire John had when he wrote to Gaius; “Beloved, in regard to all things I pray that you prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers” (3 Jn 1: 2). As Paul put it, the Christian is not complete with the principles of the doctrine of Christ such as repentance and faith, and this is where material prosperity comes in. If God permits, preachers will return to preach repentance to win more souls to the Kingdom of God, but for now those who have received Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior need to know their right to financial inheritance in Christ (which is part of the blessing of Abraham mentioned in Galatians 3: 13- 14).

          • Mark

Salvation is a big word and is not limited to your soul bring saved only. Body salvation, spirit salvation , marriage salvation , finances salvation. So a man has a soul, spirit, body – so you u r now born again and it is time to talk about other salvations

          • Rich Dad, Poor Dad

Oh my God Lazaro grow up when Jesus was dying he even said to his mother – woman your son, son your mother – this was so as to make sure that John supplies financially for Jesus’ mother.

          • Fayafaya

How do you know they are using “church money”? have you seen the church books and title deeds?

          • razaro

….because that is what The Holy Spirit is saying….”everyday they conspire, skim and plot to defraud the sheep”!! The wages of sin is DEATH bro. Pray about these things and the TRUTH will be revealed to you!!

    • Mark

Tell them that is true the gospel is always under attack. Anywere he is writing standing on the viewpoint of the world not of God. Do u understand the price tag for the blood of Jesus – u can’t equate it with any kind of material blessings. Actually material blessings r crumbs to God and He is not bothered that u like them. Does He understand what it means ” let yo kingdom come on earth” if Zuze understands that he will know that poverty is a sign of the absence of the kingdom of God. God said to Abraham I will bless u and b a blessing/ how can a poor man b a blessing to others and u think that is gospel. The bible says Zuze u r the light – how can poverty shine – u r the salt – how can poverty influence nations. Don’t write out of ignorance Zuze

      • razaro!

…..you are the one who is ignorant Mark!! So if the bible says you are the light it means you are rich?…Is blessing all about money? Did Jacob not bless the Pharaoh in Egypt even though he was almost starving and had nothing to eat?….if it was you you would have refused to be blessed by Jacob bcoz he had nothing……you guys and your lot need a reality check…you could be agents of the devil without you knowing!!

        • Eye opener

Proverbs 10: 22 says “The blessing of the LORD makes one rich and adds no sorrow to it”. That tells me- God is interested in making Christians rich in order to spread the preaching of the message of salvation, and that the Christian may reach out to the needful unbelievers, to widows and orphans, and also that they may enjoy the riches as part of His blessings. If you carefully read well the statements of the Lord Jesus Christ you will discover that God is not against the rich, but against trusting in riches at the expense of trusting in Him. To prove that one trusts in God, the Christian has to give back to God through tithes and offerings, and do alms-giving. The Bible says ‘honor the LORD with your substance’ (Prov 3:9), and it also says, “Do you not know that those who minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? And those attending the altar are partakers with the altar” (1 Cor 9: 13).

          • razaro!

I agree with you bro in the main and I see where you are coming from but, do you think it is proper for a pastor/prophet to enrich himself and his family by plundering church finances??

          • Rich Dad, Poor Dad

            which church was plunder.

        • Rich Dad, Poor Dad

Jacob never starved because of his family condition or lack of skill or failure to run a business. He had no food because of a national problem, rather environmental problem called drought. In fact he was so blessed that his offspring (joseph) fed a nation for 7 yrs and even exported during those yrs. I believe in the Gospel of Prime Ministers coming from house servants (gadheni Bhoi ) (Jacob) – that is prosperity Gospel.

          • razaro!

bro, my point was that Jacob had nothing but he blessed the Pharaoh who had everything. According to your line of argument he should never have qualified to bless anyone because he was poor, he had nothing; “anga ari Razaro to use your fev term”…in other words Pharaoh should have blessed him bcoz he was RICH!! You need to be able to follow “the grain” of an argument bro. God bless

          • Rich Dad, Poor Dad

My oh my, Pharoah also had hunger in his land for 7 yrs. It does not mean a poor person cannot bless people, a blessed person can either be poor or rich (Lazarus and Abraham). The 7 yrs of hunder in Egypt where only salvaged by a blessed man’s offspring – Prime Minister Joseph.

          • razaro!

….but you were calling poor people” thieves” just a few paragraphs above!! You are very confused bro…..poor people God loves them too only God knows why they are poor and only Him can judge them. As for my sisters you said were selling their bodies in second street at night bcoz they are poor, if you were a genuine man-of-God you would be praying for them instead of insulting them. I pray to God that you be filled with Christian grace and humility!! You are a very very bitter-man and The Holy Spirit will never dwell in people who are arrogant, rude and very angry like you. Bless your heart!!

          • Rich Dad, Poor Dad

I am not bitter at all I am passionate about defending the gospel of prosperity. Now that I know you have a Cambridge degree – give me your inbox and I will give you my phone number and we meet in person and discuss these things. Actually the Holy Spirit can actually dwell in anyone – ask Paul the Apostle at Damascus. What makes you think I am arrogant I do not know why but I stressed that is a person is rich enough to attend Cambridge he is less likely inclined to still than a poerson who is poor – that is why you have never pick pocketed and the touts at Mbare pick pocket. I have worked in poor communities in many countries in Africa. I have seen poverty first hand bro.

I was schooled in a philosophy that digs in to people’s backgrounds, education etc in to understanding why they think the way they think. I have not lost this argument if you, Spector, Razaro, Zuze and all the others want to go on one side and I be alone in supporting this prosperity Gospel I will like it. Even a TV debate on ZTV I am willing to tackle anyone who alines themselves to the gospel of poverty and demon of limitations. I still can give you shocking statistics from Zimstats on Zim poverty that are fresh to show you that peosperity gospel should be uphelp against this poverty mentality.

    • Logic Mtetwa-Mutepfa

Ah Zuze. Uprooting verses from the Bible without contextualising issues does not help. Anyone can take any verse from the Bible to justify his behaviour even drunkards can take verses that justify their drunkenness. The Old Covenant,if you remember, mostly focussed on the Israelites and Judaism but you have quoted verses from the Old Covenant at great length to justify your prosperity gospel. The New Covenant covers all of us and does not focus on the Chosen race. I think your cousin, Learnmore has valid points. Look at them carefully before you start selecting your favourite verses. I ALSO ADVISE THAT YOU READ THE WHOLE BIBLE CAREFULLY.

      • Fayafaya

According to your argument Christians must then just throw away the Old Testament (OT) because its not relevant to us. I hope that is not what you do in real life. The OT is valuable partly in its ability to illuminate the character of Yahweh. The point is: if the old Covenant had provision for the prosperity of God’s people, is it conceivable that God would do less for His children in the context of a far superior Covenant? The obvious answer is no. The New is better in every way than the Old. It in fact does have provisions for material wealth.
        Here are a few:

        Romans 8:32
He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

        2 Corinthians 8:9
For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

        2 Corinthians 9:8
God is able to bless you with ample means so that you may always have quite enough for any emergency of your own and ample besides for any kind act to others.

        Philippians 4:19
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

        3 John 2
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

Below is a letter written in 1883 by King Leopold II of Belgium to Belgian Christian missionaries being sent to Congo. These Christian missionaries would eventually become the spearhead of Belgian colonialism only to be followed by Belgian traders and lastly the Belgian army.

      Reverends, Fathers and Dear Compatriots:

The task that is given to fulfill is very delicate and requires much tact. You will go certainly to evangelize, but your evangelization must inspire above all Belgium interests. Your principal objective in our mission in the Congo is never to teach the n!ggers to know God, this they know already. They speak and submit to a Mungu, one Nzambi, one Nzakomba, and what else I don’t know.

They know that to kill, to sleep with someone else’s wife, to lie and to insult is bad. Have courage to admit it; you are not going to teach them what they know already. Your essential role is to facilitate the task of administrators and industrials, which means you will go to interpret the gospel in the way it will be the best to protect your interests in that part of the world. For these things, you have to keep watch on dis-interesting our savages from the richness that is plenty [in their underground. To avoid that, they get interested in it, and make you murderous] competition and dream one day to overthrow you.

Your knowledge of the gospel will allow you to find texts ordering, and encouraging your followers to love poverty, like “Happier are the poor because they will inherit the heaven” and, “It’s very difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of God.” You have to detach from them and make them disrespect everything which gives courage to affront us. I make reference to their Mystic System and their war fetish – warfare protection – which they pretend not to want to abandon, and you must do everything in your power to make it disappear.

Your action will be directed essentially to the younger ones, for they won’t revolt when the recommendation of the priest is contradictory to their parent’s teachings. The children have to learn to obey what the missionary recommends, who is the father of their soul. You must singularly insist on their total submission and obedience, avoid developing the spirit in the schools, teach students to read and not to reason.

There, dear patriots, are some of the principles that you must apply. You will find many other books, which will be given to you at the end of this conference. Evangelize the n!ggers so that they stay forever in submission to the White colonialists, so they never revolt against the restraints they are undergoing. Recite every day – “Happy are those who are weeping because the kingdom of God is for them.”

I am NOT poor bro!! I have a Cambridge degree among others. I went to uni with Mutambara, Francis Mawindi, James Manyika and I work for a multinational company so don’t even go there!! Like I said DO NOT INSULT people you are a Christian iwewe. Treat ppl with respect and dignity even if you don’t agree with them. Why are you taking it personal? Why are you so angry? Go to those sisters of mine who you said are selling their bodies in second street at night and ask them why they are doing what they are doing may be you can change their lives…do not judge or insult them. We as Christians need to work with such ppl and re-integrate them into our faith. I have NOT lost my faith in you bro. I challenge you to rise above these cheap arguments and make a change. God bless

        • Rich Dad, Poor Dad

I accept your admonition. Give me your number, I will call you and show you how I rose up and made a change. Now that I know you are educated you will become a Paul, preaching the Gospel of a prosperous society based on God’s word. Read the letter by King Leopold II to missionaries in Belgian Congo.

          • razaro!

            PEACE!!

Zuze if u r against poverty don’t earn any money don’t wear a suit in yo picture u r wearing one. Don’t own a car. Don’t b a hypocrite I am sure u keep looking at yo bank balance u always pray that one day u wil b in a position of not worrying about money. Write about others things my friend pamperi ne prosperity gospel. How do u finance the gospel how do u support a missionary work how do u support tv evangelism. So poverty can b able to cover the costs of running a church. Washaya

Paul the apostle has this to answer Zuze as he did to the skeptical Corinthians:

“1Co 9:7 Who serves as a soldier at his own wages at any time? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? Or who feeds a flock and does not partake of the milk of the flock?
1Co 9:8 Do I say these things according to man? Or does not the Law say the same also?
1Co 9:9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox threshing grain.” Does God take care for oxen?
1Co 9:10 Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? It was written for us, so that he who plows should plow in hope, and so that he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope.
1Co 9:11 If we have sown to you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
1Co 9:12 If others have a share of this authority over you, rather should not we?
1Co 9:13 Do you not know that those who minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? And those attending the altar are partakers with the altar.
1Co 9:14 Even so, the Lord ordained those announcing the gospel to live from the gospel.”

Bro if you start a church with the specific purpose of seeking to benefit from church resources, then you are in it for yourself and not for God and this is the problem we have today….people setting up churches so they can make money!! I see you are quoting the Bible to justify yourself…..I say to you, even the devil quotes the bible to advance his interests!! Be careful bro. God bless.

Many people speak from ignorance without the facts.Angel has challenged reporters to come and count the offering and go and pay the bills.HAS ANYONE TAKEN HIM UP THIS CHALLENGE?It is lie when you think that just because there are 10000 people in a church they are all giving or tithing.MANY PEOPLE WHO GO TO CHURCH DO NOT GIVE AT ALL.Generally it is statistically said only 20% give regularly if not less.GUYS THERE IS NO MONEY IN CHURCH.A LOT OF PASTORS HAVE BUSINESSES ON THE SIDE TO SUSTAIN THEIR LIFESTYLE .Do you actually know kuti many business people especially overseas actually give 10% of their money to charity. The principle of 10% is not just for Christians ,anyone can choose to apply it and it will work for them.UNTIL YOU TRY SOMETHING YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO SAY IT DOE NOT WORK.For it does not matter who empowers me to able to get out of debt.MANY PEOPLE WHO GO TO CHURCHES THAT PREACH ON PROSPERITY HAVE NO ACCESS TO BUSINESS people who will teach them principles.
Here is a biblical financial prosperity principle Luke 14:29 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it— .
YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT PEOPLE ARE TAUGHT PRINCIPLES THAT THEY HAVE TO APPLY TO PROSPER.
There are many business principles in the bible which are timeless and anyone can apply them for their benefit. Here is another biblical financial prosperity principle Matthew 7:24-27
    New International Version (NIV)
    The Wise and Foolish Builders
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

THIS IS WHAT IS TAUGHT ABOUT FINANCIAL PROSPERITY IN CHURCHES AND MANY MORE SCRIPTURES.
NOW HAVE SAID ALL THESE BEING A CHRISTIAN DOES NOT MEAN YOU STOP THINKING OR QUESTIONING CERTAIN THINGS THAT DOES NOT LINE UP WITH THE WORD OF GOD.

  • Taffy

  • Neutral observa

I have been following this debate after reading article iyi.its clear that Learnmore’s arguments are much much more mature and meaningful. He speaks sense more than rich dad and Mark combined.

    • Rich Dad, Poor Dad

Remember I never set out to write a scholarly article on the subject these are comments that are coming improptu. WHat you call mature is that the author is going to bed with poverty and is used to 100 years of being told to be poor – read the letter from the Belgiam Kind to the missionarries in Congo. He instructed them to teach poverty so that the colonised become so docile and blind to the plunder around them
