MUTARE – Ten people died on the spot and eight were seriously injured when a truck they were travelling in overturned and plunged into a river in Chipinge’s Musikavanhu Village.
Manicaland acting provincial police spokesperson Enock Chishiri confirmed the incident.
He said the truck was laden with sand and passengers. Chishiri said the driver of the truck had offered 24 people in the area transport before disaster struck on Sunday. He said initial reports indicate the driver failed to negotiate a curve and the lorry overturned killing 10 on the spot.
“We will release the names of the deceased after informing their next of kin,” said Chishiri. All the injured were transferred to Mutare Provincial Hospital where their condition is reported to be critical.
Efforts to get a comment from hospital authorities were fruitless. The police spokesperson said while conclusive information on the cause of the accident is yet to be established, early indications point to overloading.
“The lorry was full of sand and thereafter went on to carry 24 people and that on its own point to overloading,” said Chishiri. Daily News
