Zanu PF want to steal Libyan investments

Press Statement

By Allen Masomere (MDC-USA Information & Publicity Secretary)

Zimbabwean despot Robert Mugabe’s decision to expel Libya’s ambassador came as no surprise to us but we hasten to point out that it was as thoughtless as it was backward-looking.

ZANU-PF’s attempt to turn back the hands of time will come to nought. We in the MDC-USA unreservedly condemn this unilateral move by the ZANU-PF side of the inclusive government and call upon all freedom loving Zimbabweans to do the same.

Change has come to Libya and change will come to Zimbabwe, notwithstanding the fact that Mugabe and his ZANU-PF were the beneficiaries of the crumbs falling from Muammar Gaddafi’s table.

If Gaddafi’s looted billions could not help him withstand the full onslaught of the wrath of the Libyan people, we cannot imagine Mugabe’s feeble gesture doing anything to stall the Libyan freight train of freedom.

The expulsion of the Libyan ambassador was short-sighted and is unlikely to yield any positive outcomes for the country, except for those who stand to benefit from looting the residual assets of the Gaddafi family in Zimbabwe.

Contrary to claims by the Zimbabwe foreign ministry that the ambassador was expelled because of the African Union’s position on the Libyan uprising, it should be clear to the whole world that the real reason for this rushed action may be to enable ZANU-PF functionaries to steal Libyan investments in Zimbabwe.

Free Libyans should know that the expulsion of their ambassador was a decision made by a minority of a minority, which does not represent the true feelings of the people of Zimbabwe. The people of Zimbabwe are as tired of Mugabe and ZANU-PF as the Libyan people were of Gaddafi.

In fact, the people of Zimbabwe take pride in, and are inspired by, the accomplishment of the Libyan people in ousting the dictator and share Libyans desire to establish a more accountable and democratic system of government.

Indeed, the people of Zimbabwe look forward to a future of friendship and cooperation with their Libyan counterparts.
