Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai who is also the party leader for the main Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) on Saturday made a call to Masvingo party big wigs to stop fights fuelled by factionalism and continue to chase their goal of defeating Mugabe in the next election.

Tsvangirai was addressing the provincial leadership from the seven districts of the province at an urgent meeting called amid reports of a possible party split  fuelled by factionalism. Tsvangirai expressed the need for unity and a call to all party members to continue with their set objectives.

“Indeed as a party we have to unite and stop the issue of camps and factions and start chasing our main goal that is to defeat Zanu PF and Mugabe,” he said.

The urgent meeting was called after the party’s standing committee realized the possibility of a party split in the province which would affect the number of party legislators from the province due to the controversial results of the repeatedly held provincial congress.

Tsvangirai said the re-taking of another election will yield no result as the provincial congress was undertaken twice. He expressed the need to accept the outcomes of the election dispute claims which were made by other s.

“As a democratic moulded party, our goal is to have a free and fare election with everyone accepting the outcomes of the election. If you are defeated accept the results and congratulate the victor and stand in his support to advance party business.”

In an interview with Nehanda Radio, a party insider who declined to be named for security reasons said factionalism was affecting party activities in the province as the ‘power hungry syndrome’ was affecting the party.

“Leadership is the cause of all this and this is affecting the party business. People are now confused when they see a democratically driven party fighting for provincial posts. What will happen at the National congress if problems emerge at provincial level? Power is the main cause of all this and the virus has to be cured before its manifested widely,” said the source.

He added that these internal fights are a sign of disorganization of the party which need close attention before another split is harvested. Prime Minister Tsvangirai lambasted the infiltration by Zanu PF in creating corruption grounds to destroy the party.

“Be careful with Zanu PF.  They are trying by all means to destroy the party by using money. Corruption in the local authorities, between party members needs a fast track resolution,” he said

This act of corruption was witnessed towards the election of the speaker of parliament were Zanu PF wanted to take the seat by corrupt vote buying.

Tsvangirai was accompanied by Party Vice President Thokozani Khupe, Lovemore Moyo (National  Chairman), Elias Mudzuri (Organising Secretary) and Nelson Chamisa the Secretary for information.
