Zanu PF party spokesman Rugare Gumbo has told the state owned New Ziana agency that they are setting up a committee to identify companies operating in Zimbabwe which have roots in western countries that imposed targeted sanctions on Robert Mugabe’s regime.

In what is seen as very risky political and economic gamesmanship Gumbo warned that they would ‘take severe measures’ on the companies identified. He however said ‘the measures will not at the moment be revealed.’ Gumbo also said they would mobilize two million people for an anti-sanctions march.

Speaking at the Zanu PF conference in December last year Mugabe echoed the same remarks saying ‘the companies cannot continue to enjoy and make profits while their mother countries made Zimbabwean lives miserable.

The sanctions mantra has been used over the years by Zanu PF to try and explain away their destruction of the economy through corruption, mismanagement, looting and bad policies. Sanctions by western countries are targeted at specific individuals and companies aiding and abetting the regime.
