Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) President Obert Masaraure, Vice President Tafadzwa Kutya, Treasurer General Zivanai Muzorodzi and six other students were arrested yesterday at MSU following a protest over the arcane increment in fees of US$46. The Legal Affairs desk demands the immediate release of the apprehended student leaders.
The increment in fees was introduced this semester following the university authorities claiming that the increment will cater for the cost of generators that the institution bought on credit. Never in the history of tertiary education has been fees increased on such imprudent basis.
The University Act (1990) sets a provision for a fees ordinance that needs to be approved by the relevant ministry but the MSU authorities willy-nilly imposed the fees structure upon students despite the government having refused to approve such a diabolical act.
ZINASU is shocked by the silence of the Acting Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education Herbert Murerwa over the move by MSU of passing a deaf ear over the call by the ministry to freeze college fees.
ZINASU emerge victors on Mutare Polytechnic scandal
Meanwhile Quantity Survey National Diploma Mutare Polytechnic 2009 students finally get hold of their results after frantic efforts by ZINASU to continuously pester the examining board (HEXCO) to speed up their investigations.
Some Mutare Polytechnic lecturers assisted some students in cheating which resulted in the examining board refusing to issue out results for this group of students.
The convicted students were made to fail, however the action that is going to be taken against the lecturers is still surrounded by mystery. The students who passed however have been forced to return to college for Higher National Diploma as HEXCO cites that the students did not get adequate education at ND for them to match the labour market demands.
Bruce Nezambe one of the affected students expressed his joy over ZINASU’s revolutionary stance of continuously fighting for the students’ concerns and has challenged students to also organize themselves and heed to the calls by the national students’ body.
