Top South African kwaito musician, Mduduzi Tshabalala — popularly known as Mandoza — is expected to come to Zimbabwe and perform on May 25 at the Exhibition Park in Harare. The youthful musician will team up with dancehall artiste Winky D and the Rusike brothers.
Debbie Victor, the Marketing Manager for the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society, who are organising the show said Mandoza’s concert will signify the unity among Africans since the event coincides with Africa Day commemorations. “It’s good for Mandoza to come and perform in the country as this endorses the unity among Africans as they celebrate Africa day.
“He is definitely coming because we already made the payments for his travel and other arrangements are already in place,” she said. Victor said Mandoza’s visit would provide a platform for local artistes to showcase their talents as well as to learn from him.
“It is a platform for artistes to share ideas, him learning from our own musicians and our local artistes also get something from him,” she said. Mandoza was born in the Zola South Section of Soweto in 1978. He teamed up with three music-mad childhood friends S’bu, Sphiwe and Sizwe to form a group known as Chiskop.
The multi-award winner is one of the most popular kwaito musicians in Southern Africa. In 2001, he scooped five of 10 awards at the Metro Music Awards. His multi-platinum smash hit Nkalakatha also won the South African Music Award for Best Kwaito Music album and was also voted Song of the Year.
He has not been spared controversy either as he crashed his Chrysler SRT into the back of a VW Jetta on the N1 North near the Beyers Naude Drive off-ramp, killing colleagues Felix Thebe and Shabalala in 2008. He was found guilty on two counts of culpable homicide and was given a suspended sentence of three years and nine months.
Despite Mandoza being the main attraction at the concert, the Rusike Brothers a Zimbabwean music group of all ages is expected to thrill the fans on the concert. Made up of five brothers, the group has performed on a number of sell-out shows in the country to date.
Rising dancehall star Winky D is likely to hold his own and solidify his status as the King of Dancehall music in Zimbabwe. After giving Sizzla Kalonji a run for his money last month, Winky D has made a name for himself and is one of the most-sought-after talents at the moment. With hits like Green Like Mi Garden, Rokesheni and Chatsva among others, fans are certainly in for an Afro-mixed bag of music at the Exhibition Park. THS
