Bulawayo- Former Zimbabwe national women’s soccer team and New Orleans defender and captain Thenjiwe Dube has died. Dube (30) passed away in South Africa on Sunday after a short illness and will be buried today in Tsholotsho.

New Orleans director Khanyiso Bhebhe expressed shock at the untimely death of Dube, saying she was one of women’s football pioneers.

“We are all shocked at her death as she never got sick. She was here for the festive holiday and looked to be in good health. Her family members said she only got sick for a week before passing away.

“Her body is arriving tomorrow (today) morning and she will be laid to rest at her rural home at Tsholotsho’s Jahe Village.

“Thenjie was one of the key players for New Orleans and the national team. Whenever she visited Zimbabwe, she would come and attend training sessions with us. Despite picking up some weight, she was fit and would inspire youngsters with her work rate,” said Bhebhe.

Dube made her mark at Entumbane’s New Orleans in the late 1990s where she was part of the indomitable team that contributed most players to the Mighty Warriors.

She played alongside Precious “Gringo” Mpala, Fungai Nyamutukwa, Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda, Rosemary Mugadza, Siduduzile Nkomo, Ruth Banda and Nomsa “Boys” Moyo.

She was a regular central defender both for her club and the national team, which was coached by Benedict Moyo and Pardon Nkomo.
A nine-year-old daughter survives her. The Chronicle
