Gunners FC were crowned Zimbabwe champions on Sunday after beating their title-rivals Dynamos 2-0 in a Harare derby.

Nathan Ziwini gave the unfashionable club the lead on 62 minutes and former Dynamos player Norman Maroto added a second four minutes from full-time.

Coached by ex-Zimbabwe captain Moses Chunga, Gunners won the championship with a game to spare. Chunga is also a former player and coach of Dynamos.

He was applauded by thousands of disappointed Dynamos fans as he celebrated on the pitch. Victory over Dynamos lifted Gunners FC to 58 points while their rivals have 53 with one fixture each left.

This is only their second season in the top flight. The club will represent Zimbabwe in the 2010 African Champions League.

Dynamos may yet join them there as Zimbabwe have two spots in the Champions’ League next year.

With one game to go, Dynamos are in second place in the league.

Meanwhile Monomotapa, who reached the group stages of the African Champions League this year, are lying in 10th place of 16 teams.
