11 Students on the Run at Gt Zim Uni
Statements — By admin on November 20, 2009 11:24 amFollowing yesterday’s incident at Great Zimbabwe University, ten students have since been arrested on trumped up charges of possessing a fire arm and holding an illegal political meeting while eleven others are on the run.
In a latest development to the arrests, it is allegedly that the students were gathered in one Blessing Dubi’s room discussing about the oncoming ZINASU National Congress scheduled for next month.
This is when the Hostel Warden, Reverend Gwararauno got into the room around 2pm in the afternoon holding a gun in his hand. The students started jostling to escape, that is when 15 security guards arrived and started beating them up.
It is further reported that after 30 minutes members of the police arrived and had a discussion with the warden and the security guards. The students were shocked to hear the Warden reporting that he had found the students in possession of a fire arm leading to their arrest.
The students are currently detained at Masvingo Central Police Station but lawyers from Zimbabwe lawyers for Human rights are being denied access and up to now the students have not eaten anything since last night.
Student Solidarity Trust is trying hard to offer social safety solidarity to the affected students.

ZINASU is appalled by these malicious allegations and it is not surprising that the students will be charged with treason especially considering the fact that the President of Zimbabwe Mr. R. Mugabe will be at the college next week for the graduation ceremony.
ZINASU is in efforts to get an audience with Hon. Giles Mutsekwa and Hon Kembo Mohadi on the latest developments in Masvingo and are urging an immediate release of the students.
