Bindura-Police in Bindura yesterday arrested three student leaders during a student’s campaign meeting at Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE).

The three, namely outgoing Student Representative Council President Respect Ndanga, Chinhoyi University student activist Welcome Zimuto,Great Zimbabwe University student Tafadzwa Kutya had just finished addressing students at a campaign rally  for one of the presidential candidates Paul Dakarai in today’s SRC elections  being  held at the institution.

The arrested are still in detention at Bindura Central police station. The arrests are a clear ploy to frustrate Dakarai’s campaign team in today’s election as events on the ground are now clear that he is a clear favourite to win the polls. Last Friday nine students were arrested on allegations that they wanted to disrupt the graduation ceremony held at the institution that day.

Police and Intelligence details were frantically looking for the ZINASU President Clever Bere who had to skip Bindura for dear life. By 1900 hours police had mounted road blocks on all possible routes out of Bindura in search of the ZINASU leader. However the president managed to escape and is now safe.

ZINASU is gravely concerned about the continued persecution of student activists by the government and the arrests are a sheer act of despotism and desperation by the unpopular Harare administration. Since the beginning of the year we have noticed an escalation of abuses being matted on the students of this country.

 Meanwhile…..

One student was injured as students scrambled for copies of the ‘ZINASU Weekly’ newsletter that was being distributed at the institution during the campaign rally. The incident happened outside the college Great Hall as everyone wanted to get his/her copy of the newsletter. Information we have just received is that the student was not badly hurt and is recovering at home.
