MDC demo at Fort Hare University

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in South Africa is having a rally as Fort Hare University, as I write this statement. The venue is filled to capacity, mostly by students on Robert Mugabe’s Presidential Scholarship.

Scores of South Africans also attended the rally in a rare display of unison with MDC aligned students whose scholarship was withdrawn by some Zanu PF functionaries operating from Fort Hare.

The MDC leadership organised the rally as a response to harassment and intimidation of our branch leadership at the University. The provincial Organising Secretary Rodgers Mudarikwa has literally taken camp in Eastern Cape and vowed not to return to Johannesburg until the issue has been resolved.

MDC district Chairmen also descended on Eastern Cape’s historic Fort Hare University last night to register their dissatsfaction over the persecution of students.

“We can’t allow our structures to be vandalised by Zanu PF here in South Africa. They can do that in Zimbabwe,” charged Mudarikwa, as he addressed district chairmen during an emotional meeting which was held in Johannesburg on Thursday morning.

Johannesburg district is being represented by Jimmy Mhlanga and his deputy Tobias Maposa, KZN Chairman Nhamo Chikohore also attended the meeting. Ringrose Moyake, MDC’s Eastern Cape leader, who has been having numerous meetings with the University over the issue said the Zanu PF functionaries seem to have chucked-out students without the blessing of the University Chancellor, Tom Mvuyo.

Meanwhile the MDC Chairman, Austin Moyo has written a letter to Zimbabwe Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo, to intervene and reign in on some of the Zanu pharisees for acting outside their mandate.
