Makoni South MP arrested over 'assault'

Mutare – Makoni South MP and Manicaland provincial spokesperson, Pishai Muchauraya was this morning arrested by Mutare police on charges of common assault.

Muchauraya is currently detained at Mutare Central Police Station and there are strong indications that the police want to detain him overnight although the trumped-up charge he is facing is fineable.

His lawyer, Chris Ndlovu told The Changing Times Online the police were trying to frustrate Muchauraya by delaying to formally charge him in order to detain him overnight on frivolous charges.

Ndlovu said they had been in court since morning and the police were now saying they want to wait for the Superintendent in charge of crime to determine whether Muchauraya should be detained or released.

“All indications are that they want to detain him. We have been here for over eight hours and they are just shuffling papers around,” said Ndlovu.

The MP is denying the charges.

The arrest of Muchauraya is a clear signal that some residual elements in the inclusive government continue to frustrate and harass MDC MPs, senior officials and supporters.
