New Constitution key to free elections: MDC
News, Statements — By admin on June 24, 2009 3:58 amBulawayo – The forthcoming Constitution-making process is the only way that will ensure that the country holds credible free and fair elections, the Acting President, Hon. Thokozani Khupe, has said.
Addressing over 1 000 MDC supporters at Trenance Hall in Trenance, Bulawayo Central on Sunday, Hon. Khupe, said the Constitution-making process would give the people of Zimbabwe an opportunity to live in a free and democratic society.
“I want to thank you for your resilience and the strength you have shown. We won the harmonised elections on March 29, 2008, but we were denied the power.
“The inclusive government was implemented to save the people while we wait for a new Constitution that should lead us to free and fair elections,” she said.
The Acting President said by joining the inclusive government, the MDC was against the unnecessary killing, torture, displacements and illegal arrests against its members that were taking place.
Over 500 MDC supporters were murdered by Zanu PF and State security agents, 30 000 were internally displaced while an estimated 10 000 families had their homes destroyed.
She said although the inclusive government was facing some challenges it had managed to re-open the schools and hospitals.
Hon. Khupe urged the MPs and government ministers to be accountable to the people as it was time for the government to restore the dignity of the people, teachers and other professionals.
“It is about the people. We are in this mess because the people have not been respected,” she said.
Also present at the report back meeting were the MP for Bulawayo Central, Hon. Dorcas Sibanda, the Bulawayo East MP, Hon Thabita Khumalo and the MP for Bulawayo South, Hon. Eddie Cross.
